Origin and development


The West Highland White Terrier - Westie also called - is one of the successors of the old Scottish hunting terrier. the major developments of the race

  • the Poltalloch Terrier of Colonel Edward Donald Malcolm, Laird of Poltalloch,
  • the White Skye Terrier of the Duke of Argyll, which are known as Roseneath terriers have become known and
  • the White Scottish Terrier of Dr. Flaxmann from Fifeshire (> Pittenweems <)

The Westie is one of the short legged terriers, the beginning of the 19th Century in the Scottish highlands were not necessarily rare.

He was formerly used for hunting umbrella as he could penetrate through his wiry hair in the badger without incurring injury.

Today it is kept as a pet - but his instinct is still strong.
